If I could put into words how much I love these two studio images, I would be a novelist and not a photographer.

The reason I connect so well with kids? I see magic with them. Lots of people see magic in kiddos, but being willing to see it with them is the secret. We are instant explorers. Backyard sailors and fearless creek conquerers. Supermodels strutting the catwalk. When adults are too busy or too worried or too preoccupied, we find magic together. We eat wooden cupcakes with just as much gusto as the real deal. We laugh belly laughs at absolutely nothing. We lay in the dirt and revel in the glorious wonder of mud. There’s magic everywhere, and kids are in on the secret. Moms and Dads are only invited to join if they’re willing to come along with eyes open, prepared for attack from the band of pirates that’s been circling the backyard for days.

A BRIEF GUIDE TO THE ITALIAN MARKET

My fab friend Doey and I headed to the Italian Market for coffee and pastries in May. We were delighted to find out the Italian Market festival was going down — yay! Our first stop was Molly’s Bookstore, which has an eclectic collection of books, records, and music. Thank God I have dorky friends who enjoy spending copious amounts of time in bookstores, right?

After prying ourselves away from the fiction-y goodness, we met Johnny. He’s 10. He draws your portrait for $3. He’s downright rad. I had my portrait done and then forced Doey to give him $3, too. Hugs to child artists!

The Italian Market festival also had a giant arts and crafts fair. I bought a necklace made from an old fork that’s stamped with ‘risktaker.’

Sadly, I don’t have a photo of the best part of the day…a meatball sandwich from Talluto’s. For real, a meatball sandwich. It had THE best marinara sauce on top of the THE best meatballs I’ve ever tasted.

If I lived closer to Talluto’s, you’d have to cut me out of my house to get your kid’s portraits taken.

Our new studio has divine light and is finally finished! Since I had photographed Maddie’s siblings a few weeks ago, she was super excited to have the spotlight all to herself. Maddie rocked the new studio with her fab outfits, dancing and making silly faces and even removing her Silly Bandz on my behalf. (She rocked ‘em for the last outfit.) Oh, and Miss Maddie’s got the most delightful giggle you’ve ever heard.

Maddie’s siblings were around and I convinced Mom that we could get all four of them to cooperate on the coffee table. She called me crazy. Of course I’m crazy! But it worked…

MICAELA, CURLY-HAIRED WONDER.

There are standard questions my portrait subjects get asked. Ask ‘em which song they know, and they’ll burst into ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ or the ABC’s. Not Micaela. She did a full-tilt, no-holds-barred version of Annie’s ‘It’s a Hard-Knock Life.’

She also showed off her vast array of princess shoes. Many of them have light-up heels, and I was extremely jealous. Micaela found them perfect for checking the mail.

Loved this retro little ditty and the silly face, too…
